I came to Queenstown planning on a holiday full of activities and day trips and that sort of thing. But once I got to Amokura, all I wanted to do was sit out on the deck, or in front of the fire in the lounge, and soak up the view. My friends had to use a crowbar to get me to leave! Incredibly relaxing and luxurious. It can fool you as you drive in, it's not till you get inside that you really appreciate what you've found. The hostess is fantastic: Friendly and helpful and down-to-earth; even better she's apparently one of few who have been in Queenstown for a long time, so she knows all the inside tricks and tips. Drop a few vague hints and she can plan out your Queenstown holiday in 5 minutes flat (or so it seemed). A fantastic place to stay; highly recommended.
We stayed for 3 nights and 4 days on 2 BR and 1 disable unit. The disability access was not an ideal location. It was situated at the far end and bottom level of the compound, entry is curve, slanting downward path (no lights at night). Our family stayed for 3 nights and 4 days. Internal ammenities are clean, modern and the disability bathroom stool was available. The stairs was a big problem for someone with disability. So my Mom had to stayed in her room and cannot enjoy the lounge or kitchen/dinning area. Overall good but NOT GOOD for someone with disability. ALSO you pay half in advance upon booking and pay the remaining sum upon arrival, which normally you settle your account on the last day and not upon arriving. SO WEIRD!
2mins walk from the center of Queenstown, but: The bed was uncomfortable, the decor faded and shabby looking, the shower looked like something in a gym (stainless steel floor), the windows off the kitchen and bathroom were frosted but had no coverings, and there was mold on the bathroom ceiling. In the reception area is one of those signs that reads "I can only please one person a day, and today is not your day" or something like that. Not a good look for an establishment in a customer-service oriented industry. After 2 nights here we booked into a 4-star hotel 2 minutes walk away for $20 less per night that was far nicer. Amber Lodge is more of a 2.5 star motel and should be priced accordingly. I regretted booking here.
