Lone Star Cafe & Bar - Dunedin The best family bar and restaurant Serving Legends like you Since 1988.

It was out with the pompous nouvelle cuisine that was all the go in the 80s and in with the concept that dining out should be fun and value for money. The original restaurant menu was a combination of comfort food, Kiwi classics and a few Lone Star originals. Some of these dishes from that first menu are still being served today and are as popular as ever. Dishes like the Lassoo of Hog, Dixie Chicken and the iconic Redneck Ribs prove that food fads come and go but good food never goes out of fashion.

When you share a birthday with such luminaries as artist JB Priestley and writer Roald Dahl you know you're destined to be different. So it is with the Lone Star which opened its door at 26 Manchester St on September, 13th 1988 determined to create a different dining experience for the people of Christchurch.

The cowboy theme, rich in the history of frontiersmen and risk-takers, was exemplified by the walls of the Café literally dripping with western art and memorabilia. But that very theme provided the early Lone Star staff with a constant reminder of the unknown territory they were entering. For a start, many would say the Café's location, some way from the city centre, would discourage guests. But it didn't - perseverance paid off, and it wasn't long before people were coming in droves to dine at the Lone Star, to enjoy cool Country music and to participate in an atmosphere that always suggested that something very special was going down. After 21 years, this is still the case – at Lone Star a fun, unpretentious night out is guaranteed.

The Lone Star is famous for providing quality with quantity, using only the best and freshest local produce. It's not only the size of the meals that are memorable- the service too, is legendary- your meals are served with a genuine smile in generous portions.

There are now 23 Lone Star's throughout New Zealand so there's bound to be one near you.

We invite you to visit, dine with us and enjoy the buzz of mingling with like-minded people who want to enjoy themselves. Because at the Lone Star we can truly say, "the fun never sets."

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

We strive to run the best restaurant operation in New Zealand. From the moment you enter any of our Café's and are welcomed by our friendly staff. We want you to enjoy a fantastic fun filled night with us. We will always do our very best to ensure you receive fast, efficient and friendly service, outstanding food sourced from the best and freshest ingredients, offering value for your hard earned money.

We usually go to Lonestar for our family birthdays and really enjoy the experience.
On this occasion both my husband and i felt quite rushed and it was a little disappointing not to have our sons birthday recognised. Admittedly we should have said something so he would get a little candle on his dessert but usually we are asked if we are celebrating something special. Having said this, we did note that the server was training another girl at this time also. She was definitely very efficient and friendly with the kids which was really lovely.
The food was great (as usual) and I love the atmosphere and music which is very relaxing

Great quality and tasty food always. However, I think there is a lot of food wastage. The size of the mains are far too big for the average diner to manage, Cut down on the potato wedges/chips for example. Cheers

We had a recent family dinner at Lone Star Dunedin. We were impressed with the way that our young granddaughter was catered for, a picture to colour in with myriads of pencils. Also the way her meal was brought out promptly while ours were being prepared. Staff were pleasant and meals nicely presented, generous servings and our steaks cooked to perfection.
Will recommend to friends and will definitely dine there again.

Once again we dined at Lonestar and true to form the meal was great in both value for money and taste. Our wait staff were welcoming and attentive throughout the meal and asked if we wanted childrens meals brought out first or all together. Drinks were topped up and staff checked if we would like dessert.
Thanks for another great dining experience.

We had to wait for ages despite making a reservation, food was average when asked for extra garlic butter was told it was going to cost extra, when I asked how much, I was told it was $3 which was a crazy amount for a table spoon sized portion. However we ended up being charged 50 cents so unsure why we were given the wrong price. Dessert was the best meal of the night despite the base being frozen solid. I wouldn't return as I have had better service, dining environments and food at other Dunedin restaurants.

Our family went to the Dunedin Lone Star but we're disappointed with the time it took for the meals to come out.

Limited options available for those with dietary requirements - I recently learned that the feta used in the 'vegetarian' salad contains fish ... This is pretty disappointing when a meal is marketed as being suitable for a vegetarian!

Birthday lunch - staff was not very interested. Drinks order got forgotten, after chasing up the drinks they served the wrong drinks. Had to ask three times for colouring pens. The birthday cake that was brought in sat on the bench were customers paid. Was not the usually good experience we expected.

Hey Team - had a great night friendly and helpful staff. Tough to remember who is who as to staff as we had Bar and restaurant staff and the restaurant staff member changed during the service, no problem just hard to review. Feedback - this site you are using for reviews, is messy and not user friendly. I cant change the Rating - hence no rating. Thanks Wade
