Elm Wildlife Tours Eco Tour
Our multi-award winning, daily, 'small group' tour departs from Dunedin city in the mid-afternoon for the Otago Peninsula wildlife 'hotspots'. The tour combines tourism and conservation in a symbiotic relationship and provides absolutely unrivalled viewing of estuarine and marine wildlife. Our knowledgeable guides will inform you of activity being viewed and visit places where the best possible viewing of Hooker's Sea lions, Yellow-eyed Penguins, Blue Penguins, a breeding colony of New Zealand Fur Seals and Royal Albatross can be had. A further 25-30 other estuarine and marine bird species are seen during the experience. Close up unobtrusive viewing from beach locations and strategically placed observation hides is guaranteed. Most days Albatross are seen flying at Taiaroa headland, but a further opportunity to see other pelagic sea bird occurs at our conservation area. Lots of sea birds are seen flying close to here including numerous petrel and shearwater species and a further four or five other Albatross species can be seen and identified. Although all animals are generally seen on our tours, three inclusion options are available to enhance your experience, and the different format of the "Peninsula encounters LITE" tour adds an option for those less fit. These options are a Taiaroa head boat cruise aboard the 'Monarch', an Albatross breeding area tour conducted by the Royal Albatross Centre or all of these combined into one "Total Wildlife" eight hour afternoon/evening package.

We had a fantastic time on this tour with our 12 year old daughter last week. Our tour guide was Tony, who has 13 years experience and is a wealth of knowledge. We saw all the wildlife we had hoped to see, and got lots of great photographs and memories. One thing he did that was particularly useful was that he would give a time estimate between each stop so we'd know whether to ask for a bathroom break or not. He also had binoculars we could borrow, and for a couple of unprepared people on our tour, he had durable waterproof jackets for them to borrow.

Although quite expensive, the tour is really nice with encounter to many animals, and really close to yellow-eyed penguins!
